Tens of thousands of people will be able to access group support as part of a nine-month programme to support individuals in making longterm behavioural changes to help halt or reverse the progression of type 2 diabetes.
Thrive Tribe were delighted to recently win six new National Diabetes Prevention Programme contracts for the next three years with Peterborough & Cambridge, Derby & Derbyshire, North East London, North West London, South East London and South West London ICBs selecting the company as their new provider. Thrive Tribe is also currently successfully delivering an NDPP contract in Cornwall, which began in 2022.
As well as a universal offer to the general population, specialist online programmes will also be provided to those with impaired hearing, impaired sight, members of the South Asian population and women with a history of gestational diabetes (all high-risk groups for type 2 diabetes).
Evidence has shown that the NHS spends around £10 billion a year on diabetes – around 10% of its entire budget – and the NHS DPP is highly cost effective in the long-term. Almost one million people in England have been referred to the programme since it was first launched in 2016.
Data has suggested that the healthy living programme resulted in a 7% reduction in the number of new diagnoses of Type 2 diabetes in England between 2018 and 2019, with around 18,000 people saved the dangerous consequences of the condition. It was estimated that more than 7000 excess deaths involving diabetes were recorded in England in 2022,
Thrive Tribe’s support of residents in their new areas will get underway in January 2024, as they support the local populations to improve their health and wellbeing.
Once signed up to the programme, people will receive help and support from a health coach over a 9-month period to advise them on how to live a healthier life, and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. During the group sessions topics covered will include how to eat more healthily, how to do more physical activity, how to improve your sleep, and how to make long term changes to behaviour.
Referral into the programme needs to be via your GP, or there are more details available at Thrive Tribe’s NDPP website, https://healthieryou.org.uk. Anyone who is defined by the tool as being at an elevated risk of becoming diabetic can access the programme.
Inline with the rest of its services, which include smoking cessation, adult weight management and physical activity programmes, Thrive Tribe is aiming to bring an innovative, client-centred behaviour change approaches to the NDPP to deliver successful outcomes for clients.
