Zero Discrimination Day is an annual awareness day celebrated on the 1st March each year.
The day was created by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé and aims to celebrate, promote and encourage people to practice equality throughout their daily activities. We’re committed to embracing diversity and promoting an inclusive culture at Thrive Tribe, because how can we provide the best support to our diverse rnage of clients, if we aren’t inclusive ourselves!
Read 4 ways you can fight unconscious bias at work below;
1. Question and be curious Start with yourself. If you notice you are making assumptions without evidence to support them, stop and question where your unconscious bias comes from. Also, pay attention to others. If you feel someone has made a statement that demonstrates an unconscious bias, flag it and be supportive.
2. Make meetings inclusive If you’re a participant, be respectful, listen to everyone and be constructive. If you’re running the meeting, plan the meeting agenda and who will lead each item, ask for everyone’s opinion and encourage counter opinions.
3. Promote supportive dialogue In order to do so, start by acknowledging — state your understanding without judgment. Then clarify. Ask people to explain their beliefs so that you avoid making any incorrect assumptions. After that, look for evidence, ask for specific examples. Ask people to brainstorm if there could be another solution.
4. Avoid bias during recruitment and talent management assessments Use our new job description template! Think carefully about what skills and qualifications are required - if it's not essential or something we can train, don't include it! We want our jobs to appeal to a diverse pool of candidates. Create a diverse hiring panel, made up of not just management but people already doing the role too. Pause and think before making a decision. Know the drivers of your decisions. Refer to past behaviors and examples instead of relying on your feelings and stereotyping.
